eGovWatch: 563 offiers suspended after Delhi police receive complaints on Whatsapp

Last year, 28 cases were registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act against 44 police personnel and two Delhi homeguards, Delhi Police statistics revealed. Police also said 563 police personnel were suspended for various omissions.

The suspensions were made after senior police officers received complaints about errant police officers from the public via the WhatsApp helpline.

“The initiative that we started to connect with the people bore good results. We received over 48,852 WhatsApp messages from people along with recordings on our helpline that had proof of police personnel involved in corrupt activities. Immediate action was taken against the errant officers and they were suspended from duty,” Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra said.

Police said 665 departmental inquiries were also initiated against police officers in which 856 personnel were found to be involved in corruption. Police also initiated 538 vigilance inquiries after information about officers involved in corruption came to fore.

“Last year, we received 7,074 calls and 2,064 SMSes from the public. Cases were registered after verifying the allegations,” he said.
