eGovWatch: E-auction of fancy numbers fetches govt Rs 15 lakh in 3 days

The Transport department has already collected Rs 15 lakh through the e-auction of fancy number plates in the capital.

Fifty-nine people had registered online with the department until Tuesday to take part in the auction. Transport department said it received 244 enquiry calls regarding the e-auction over the last three days.

On September 19, the department received nearly 145 enquiries. Since then, the number of enquiries had been steadily increased, officials said. The online auction is being conducted by the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) on behalf of the Transport department. The process for bidding will begin with a week-long online registration.

Once registered, each prospective bidder will receive a unique acknowledgement number (UAN). Officials said in the first round of the bidding, vehicle owners in Delhi will be allowed to bid for 140 numbers. Officials said numbers 0009, 0777, 0786, 5555 and 8888 were the most popular numbers. No bid has been made for the registration number 0001, which is the most expensive with the minimum reserve price fixed at Rs 5 lakh.

As part of the auctioning policy, the fancy number plates have been divided into five categories with a base price for each category. Officials added that the bidding process will continue until September 30. Each bidder will have to deposit the reserve price to participate in the bidding. The person will then be given a password, which will be sent through e-mail or a text message. “If the final payment is not made by the bidder, the deposit amount will not be returned,” the official said. –
