eGovWatch: Safety App for women that will work on all phones in works

Delhi government is set to launch a women’s safety application that will be compatible with all types of mobile phones and function without a internet connection.

The department of women and child welfare is in the process of reviewing the App through demonstrations. “The App will be linked with the government’s helplines and will function without internet. It is being developed by PhD students for free. It is currently posted on their server and we are trying to get it on the NIC server,” Saumya Gupta, the department’s director, said.

“The App will not be limited to smartphones and is aimed at aiding even those women who have phones costing Rs 2,000-3,000. The App will be able to show the location of the phone even when the phone has zero balance and no data connection.”

Gupta said the department will brainstorm with members of the Delhi Commission for Women and other government officials about the features. The department is yet to decide a name for the App.

On a related subject, Aswani Kumar, secretary of social welfare and women and child department, said the women’s helpline will have to be reworked. “There can be no hesitation that the helpline is not meeting its objective,” Kumar said.
