eGovWatch: Jan Dhan Yojana made India see wealth of poor, says Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJYD) has made the country able to see the wealth of poor.

“So far, India had seen the prosperity of the rich. The Jan Dhan Yojana has been able to make us see the wealth of the poor,” Modi said addressing the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi.

“As much as Rs.14,000 crore has been deposited in Jan Dhan accounts,” he added.

Modi said the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG subsidy, had shown the potential of the enormous role that the banking sector can play in ensuring financial inclusion.

Speaking at the same event, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also hailed the Jan Dhan Yojana, calling it a tremendous success.

“The next phase will be to provide social security like accident and life insurance, and pensions schemes, to PMJDY account holders,” he said.

As part of the Make in India initiative, the Prime Minister urged RBI to take the lead in ensuring that India starts to manufacture the paper and ink that are used to print currency notes.

The Governor of Maharashtra Shri Vidyasagar Rao, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis and the Governor of the RBI Dr. Raghuram Rajan were present on the occasion.
