Women’s Day Special: Kirti Patil, Senior Executive Vice President and CTO, Kotak Life

We cannot have a forced balance, it has to be an earned balance based on merit. The balance has to be in giving equal opportunities and having equal yardsticks for performance measurement for both men and women.

What is the one career advice that you still abide by?

Taking initiatives. It’s your career, so while others may open doors for you, the journey and progress is your own based on your self-drive and personal motivation.

Moreover, one has to be open to learn new things, which is absolutely important when it comes to technology, which is constantly changing.

Lastly, one should try to do what they enjoy. There will be times where you will not get to do things that you enjoy, in such situations, one has to find enjoyment in whatever they do.

Do you believe in having a gender balance in your team-ups? How do you encourage women in your team to take up leadership roles?

I absolutely believe in balance and the right kind of opportunities for the right kind of people. We cannot have a forced balance, it has to be an earned balance based on merit. I believe in giving equal opportunities and having equal yardsticks for performance measurement for both men and women in my team.

I believe in giving the flexibility that the women expect.

What is the next big technology you’re excited about?

AI and ML along with Natural Language Processing. I believe that the full potential of AI and ML has not yet been realised. India really needs capabilities to deliver the services in regional languages. With the availability of vast amounts of good quality data, AI and ML have good use cases, not just in business but also in managing technology operations.
