Cloudflare gives AI Agents an identity and a wallet

Cloudflare has introduced Cloudflare Wallets and Cloudflare. pay, a new set of capabilities designed to give AI agents a verifiable digital identity and the ability to make secure online payments on behalf of their owners, as the company looks to address one of the key infrastructure challenges emerging in the agentic AI era.

The new offerings are intended to enable businesses to verify who is behind an AI agent while allowing those agents to complete transactions within spending limits defined by their human owners.

According to Cloudflare, AI agents are increasingly being used to browse websites, interact with APIs and make purchases autonomously. However, the existing internet infrastructure lacks mechanisms to reliably identify these agents or securely manage payments they initiate.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, said the internet is entering a new phase where autonomous software agents will increasingly participate in digital commerce.

“The Internet is shifting from human-driven browsing to agent-driven commerce, and the infrastructure needs to keep up. When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it. Cloudflare can give agents a face—a link to the human or organisation that owns them, so that trust, accountability, and real commerce can follow. It’s the identity and payment infrastructure the agentic web needs to function.”

Digital identity for AI agents

Cloudflare said every Cloudflare account will receive a unique web address that functions as a persistent digital identity. Users will be able to extend this identity to individual AI agents, allowing websites and online services to verify which person or organisation authorised a request.

The company said this approach aims to reduce the uncertainty businesses currently face when distinguishing between legitimate AI assistants acting on behalf of customers and malicious automated bots.

Wallets with built-in spending controls

Alongside identity, Cloudflare is introducing a payment infrastructure centred around Cloudflare Wallets.

Each account will have an account wallet capable of holding and managing stablecoins, while users will also be able to create virtual wallets for individual AI agents.

These virtual wallets will include configurable controls, allowing users to define spending limits, approve specific merchants and set maximum transaction values before an AI agent is authorised to make purchases independently.

Cloudflare said the wallet infrastructure will integrate with its Monetisation Gateway, enabling what it describes as a two-sided payment ecosystem for AI agents and online businesses.

Supporting the emerging agentic economy

The launch reflects the growing focus across the technology industry on building infrastructure for agentic AI, where autonomous software systems not only generate information but also perform tasks, negotiate with digital services and execute transactions.

By combining identity verification with programmable payments, Cloudflare aims to establish the trust mechanisms required for AI agents to participate safely in commercial activities on behalf of individuals and enterprises.

Cloudflare said Wallet handle reservations are now open. Full wallet functionality, including funding, withdrawals and the creation of virtual wallets, which is expected to become available in the coming months.
