Flipkart ‘Billion Day’ sale impact: Traditional retailers call for govt intervention

The Flipkart ‘Big Billion Day’ sale on Monday has sent the already-nervous traditional store owners into a huddle as their association called for immediate government intervention.

Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) termed the sale by online retailers as a “fight of one upmanship” among themselves. Calling it as unfair, the association said that they were trying to control and dominate trade in monopolistic way.

“We are consulting lawyers to move CCI against this,” said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general, CAIT.

While the surge in customer flow in response to the sale resulted in glitches on Flipkart.com and customer dissonance, experts say that they will forget about it in a few days and e-retailing is only going to grow.

“E-tail is here … While consumers have a large assortment to choose from, they are also getting big discounts without having to visit physical stores,” said Arvind K Singhal, chairman and MD Technopak.
