Aiming to develop Amritsar as a smart city, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Tuesday the 500 metre stretch of road from Chowk Phuwara to Golden Temple would be developed as “world’s best street”.

The detailed project report is ready and work on it will commence by August 2015 after completing tendering and allocation formalities,” he said at a meeting convened here today to review the implementation of plans for developing Amritsar as a smart city.

A statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and huge fountain would be built at the Chowk Phuwara roundabout, which would be completed within a year, the Deputy CM said.

The fountain will showcase cascading waterfalls, water animations, computerised water show and would emerge as a ‘thing of beauty’ in the city, he said, adding this will be coupled with the fa?ade development and beautification of the earmarked stretch.

Badal also informed that the surrounding areas of Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh will be maintained as per global standards.

Deputy CM said the fa?ade of buildings in the area including Dharam Singh Market would be beautified under a uniform theme, with red sand stone and would have uniform signage.

Automatic bollards would be installed near the main fountain, demarking the stretch as pedestrian pathway having all amenities, he said.

Ample plantation would be done and sculpture related to the state’s heritage would also be installed in front of Dharam Singh Market, Badal said, adding a tall sculpture related to freedom struggle of the country would be set up near Jallianwala Bagh.

Another main highlight of this project is transformation of the faade of Saragarhi parking area into an electronic fa?ade signage equipped with LED video screens, on the pattern of Times Square in New York, Badal said.

Also a food court would be developed opposite Dharam Singh Market, he said.

The beautification of Town Hall building would also commence to transform it into a state museum, Badal added.
