American networking giant will deploy a citywide smart city framework to roll out Smart City solutions in the city of Nagpur

Announcing slew of measures aimed at helping the digital transformation of the Maharashtra, American network technology giant Cisco said it would help Nagpur become the Smart City.

“We would deploy a citywide smart city framework to roll out Smart City solutions in the city of Nagpur,” said Dinesh Malkani, President, Cisco India & SAARC.

In an event in Mumbai, Cisco announced that it would roll out Smart City Solutions in Nagpur to enable city-wide network connectivity, smart and secure Wi-Fi hotspots, and smart safety and surveillance solutions.

Under this initiative, the various citizen services enabled by smart cities architecture, like smart transport, solid waste management, smart lighting, environmental sensors, and smart parking, will be integrated on Cisco’s City Digital Platform.

With this platform, the city administrators will have a single view of all infrastructure to manage the city with increased operational efficiency and productivity, enabling them to provide quality infrastructure and services to citizens, said Cisco.

Nagpur was selected under Smart City Mission during the third round of the competition completed in September in which 27 new cities were chosen to be Smart City taking the total number of cities in the list to be 60. Apart from Nagpur, four more cities from Maharashtra – Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivali, Nashik and Thane were also selected for the Smart City project.

Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program which was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2015 with a mission to develop 100 cities all over the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable. Later, the government revised target to 109 cities.

“We have made significant investments in India since we established operations in the country in 1995, and today’s announcement is another milestone in deepening our commitment to India. Today we lay the foundation for the next chapter in Cisco’s development in India, and help strengthen India’s global leadership position in digital transformation,’’ said Malkani.

Other than Cisco, earlier in August 2016, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had handed over the letter of intent to the Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to implement a large-scale integrated smart city solution for Nagpur which included laying of 1,200 km of optical fibre network, creating 136 city wi-fi hotspots at key locations, setting up 100 digital interactive kiosks and developing city surveillance systems with 3,800 IP-based cameras.
