Enhancing Efficiency: How IT Systems Streamline Skipper’s Manufacturing Processes

Subrata Roy, Sr. GM– Head -IT at Skipper Limited speaks exclusively to Express Computer about his organisation’s new tech projects and implementations, focusing on innovation, global growth strategies, and the use of emerging tech like AI, ML, and cybersecurity.

Excerpts of the interview:

1. Can you give a brief about Skipper? 

Skipper is a manufacturing organisation that operates in three distinct sectors. The first is the Engineering Division, which focuses on the production of high-voltage power transmission towers and high-mass poles. These high-mass poles are commonly seen in cities, serving as smart poles that support various lighting and communication equipment. 

Skipper also has a dedicated testing bed for tower load testing. This facility allows them not only to conduct load testing for their own products but also to offer these services to other organisations. In addition to the Engineering Division, Skipper has a PVC vertical that specialises in manufacturing PVC pipes, bath fittings, tanks, and other related products. This vertical caters to the demand for PVC-based solutions in various industries. 

Lastly, Skipper has an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) Division, which serves as an extension of the Engineering Division. This division takes charge of executing end-to-end projects, leveraging the expertise and capabilities of the organisation in delivering comprehensive solutions. By operating in these different sectors, Skipper demonstrates a diverse range of manufacturing capabilities and expertise, catering to various industry needs and providing comprehensive solutions to its customers.

2. What are the key challenges for your industry and the role of IT in addressing some of these issues? 

Challenges are manifold, depending on various verticals. The manufacturing industry faces various challenges, including order customisation, on-time delivery, and project tracking. In the engineering division, ensuring product quality and timely execution are key concerns. In the EPC division, monitoring remote sites presents challenges.

For B2C businesses, logistics and demand fulfillment are critical. IT plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. By implementing ERP systems, companies can streamline order tracking, inventory management, and production scheduling. Advanced analytics and predictive modeling enable better forecasting. Project management software facilitates efficient project monitoring and resource allocation. Supply chain management systems optimise logistics and improve inventory visibility. Real-time data analytics aid in identifying market trends and consumer preferences. IT solutions enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

3. Can you articulate the role of AI for your company? Would you like to comment on some of the initiatives taken?

The role of AI in our company is currently being explored, although we have not implemented any specific AI initiatives in our business as of now. However, we recognise the potential opportunities that AI presents and are actively considering its integration into our operations. One area where we have already started utilising AI is in our IT department. Specifically, in our PVC manufacturing division, we have implemented multiple automated systems that leverage AI capabilities. 

These systems enable us to perform predictive analysis, allowing us to anticipate potential issues and take proactive measures for maintenance. Additionally, we can track replenishment cycles more efficiently, ensuring that inventory levels are optimised and production processes remain uninterrupted. While we have yet to fully harness the power of AI throughout our organisation, we are actively exploring its potential in various aspects of our business. As technology continues to evolve, we remain committed to staying at the forefront of innovation and leveraging AI to drive efficiency and enhance our overall operations.

4. Your view on the security threats impacting your company? What are some of the measures that you have taken?

In today’s interconnected world, security is a pressing concern, as most applications are cloud-based and accessible via the internet. To address this reality, we have taken proactive measures within our organisation. Instead of relying solely on standard antivirus solutions, we have implemented an Enhanced Vulnerability Response (EVR) system and engaged 24/7 monitoring SOC services to promptly detect and respond to potential threats. 

Additionally, we acknowledge the human factor as a weak link in security and prioritise employee education on safe online practices. To further strengthen our security, we are considering the remapping of our network infrastructure, including robust firewalls, access controls, and encryption protocols. These initiatives aim to enhance our overall security posture, safeguarding our systems, data, and network from evolving threats.
