How Maruti Suzuki is charting its future using data as its backbone of transformation

In the fast-paced world of automobiles, Maruti Suzuki isn’t just keeping up; it’s steering the course. Embarking on a transformative journey, the automobile giant is reshaping its digital landscape. Under the stewardship of Rajesh Uppal, Senior Executive Director-IT, HR & Safety, and CIO of Maruti Suzuki India, the company is weaving a comprehensive data ecosystem

Says Rajesh Uppal, Senior Executive Director-IT, HR & Safety, CIO of Maruti Suzuki India, “The company is diligently working on establishing a comprehensive data ecosystem, including the development of a new battery plant. Significant investments are being made to ensure an end-to-end data supply chain. The goal is to facilitate the consumption of data and capitalize on its value throughout the company. As data is drawn from diverse sources—customer systems, data management, ERP systems, and the vast expanse of social media, we have created a robust Data Mesh. This mesh acts as a conduit, where data from various systems flows in, gets catalogued, and becomes readily accessible for consumption. If any piece is missing, our dedicated team steps in, ensuring a harmonious data supply chain.”

Rajesh Uppal envisions this to be a data ecosystem where data can be made available on the fly for specific use cases. Today, close to 40 to 50 use cases are already being run using this data mesh. The company is also publishing an internal catalog, which is being simultaneously replicated across all its training branches to publicise and spread awareness.

Today, Maruti Suzuki has a separate Digital Enterprise Team, that has close to 35 dedicated data scientists, that is devoted to this initiative. The inception of the digital enterprise, a dedicated office managing digital projects, underscores the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. Says Rajesh Uppal, “This five-year-old initiative, starting with just five people, has evolved into a team of 500. Specific series within the initiative, such as the Data Series, focus on harnessing the potential of data. Other series, like IoT, contribute to the creation of a smart factory. Teams dedicated to automation, Agile development, and process innovation are collaborating to explore new business opportunities.” This team is also working with more than startups, who are looking at building innovative solutions that can help Maruti Suzuki improve its competitive edge.
