LightMetrics brings ΦFP to India to reduce false driver-safety alerts

The AI layer improves drowsiness and fatigue alert precision from 94% to 99.1%, helping fleet safety teams focus on verified risk events

LightMetrics has announced the availability of ΦFP (Zero False Positives) in India, a cloud-based AI layer designed to reduce false driver-safety alerts before they reach fleet managers.

The launch comes as India’s commercial transport sector faces continued road-safety challenges while fleet operators increasingly adopt AI-powered driver monitoring systems. According to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data shared in Parliament, India recorded 487,705 road accidents and 177,177 fatalities in 2024. Over-speeding accounted for 344,446 accidents and 123,947 fatalities during the year.

As driver-monitoring systems become more widely deployed, the accuracy of the alerts they generate is becoming an important consideration. A high volume of false positives can increase the workload for safety teams, affect driver trust and make it harder to focus on incidents requiring intervention.

ΦFP adds a cloud-based layer of AI to existing driver-monitoring systems. Safety events initially detected by in-vehicle camera systems are re-evaluated by a more powerful AI model before they are sent to a fleet manager’s coaching queue.

The approach is designed to complement, rather than replace, edge AI. In-vehicle systems continue to support real-time detection, while ΦFP uses cloud-based computing to conduct an additional assessment of detected events against a higher accuracy threshold.

Improving alert precision

Drowsiness and fatigue are among the more challenging driver behaviours to detect accurately because they can manifest in different ways. LightMetrics says its edge AI achieves 94% precision for these events.

In early customer deployments, ΦFP increased precision to 99.1%. According to the company, this reduces false-positive alerts from approximately 60 to nine for every 1,000 genuine drowsy-driving incidents.

For fleet safety teams, the objective is to reduce the number of inaccurate alerts requiring manual review and enable greater focus on verified driver-risk events.

Implications for fleet safety

For operators managing large vehicle fleets, reducing false positives can help safety teams spend less time reviewing inaccurate alerts and more time addressing genuine risks through driver coaching.

The company also expects improved alert accuracy to support greater driver acceptance of monitoring systems by reducing instances of incorrect or disputed flagging.

LightMetrics is making ΦFP available to fleet operators, telematics providers and OEM partners in India, building on its deployments across North America, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

The India rollout forms part of the company’s broader focus on improving the accuracy and usability of AI-powered video telematics for commercial fleets.
