ChatGPT and AI: Impact on the EdTech industry

By being at the intersection of tech and education, I’ve had the unique opportunity to witness the AI-led transformation that’s reshaping how we approach learning and personal growth. AI isn’t a new kid on the block, but it was only a handful of years ago when it really made a splash in the mainstream tech pool. And what a splash it’s been! Now, with the launch of the generative AI tool ChatGPT in late 2022, we’re looking at a whole new universe of possibilities for digital education and upskilling platforms. With technology evolving at breakneck speed and new innovations cropping up left, right, and center, there’s a pressing need to upskill to not just stay ahead of the game, but also to remain relevant.

The Dawn of AI-Driven Learning
When the global pandemic made its grand entrance, education had to do a quick pivot to online platforms. We had to think on our feet and roll out innovative teaching methodologies to keep the learning rhythm alive. But here’s where the plot thickens – the real game-changer in the edtech sector is now showing its face through the recent development of sophisticated AI tools like ChatGPT. These tools are set to flip the script on how we approach education in the digital age.

The edtech scene in India is buzzing with excitement, and the impact of integrating AI is nothing short of remarkable, with numerous companies leading the charge. Among them, GrowthSchool has proudly pioneered the efforts of incorporating modules on ChatGPT and other generative AI tools into every one of our programs, bringing the power of this revolutionary technology to the forefront of learning and skill development.

The magic of ChatGPT and Generative AI isn’t just for learners aiming to future-proof themselves with courses from edtech companies. One of the biggest game-changers is the power these tools give teachers to tailor their lessons to each learner’s style, revving up the quality and speed of learning. Picture real-time feedback, engaging and interactive learning, and even immersive and gamified environments. And guess what? AI tools in education and upskilling might just be the key to eliminating bias and paving the way for standardised and fair learning opportunities for everyone.

Survival of the Fittest
The law of the jungle is as real for the skills sector in 2023 as it was in the Stone Age. If a role can be automated, you bet it will be in the AI and ChatGPT era. It’s not that human jobs are about to vanish into thin air. But let’s not kid ourselves – the new jobs popping up in the future will call for new skills. And with intelligent automation on the rise, organisations will get more output with fewer human resources.

Imagine one person wielding a high-tech AI tool like ChatGPT doing the work of three regular employees. We’ve seen it happen – tasks that would take human writer hours are done in under two minutes by ChatGPT. So here’s the long and short of it: it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there; if you’re in the corporate rat race or trying to break into it, you’ve got to keep your skills razor-sharp and up-to-date.

Steering into the Future
The advent of Generative AI has blasted open the doors to a future that’s set to be more automated, streamlined, and productivity-oriented than anything we’ve seen before. The current versions of ChatGPT have only begun to scratch the surface of what’s possible. Such technologies would offer every user the proverbial 8-arms to multitask and individuals mastering these tools could easily handle the workload of 3-4 people. The best part? The output would be even more polished, and still less taxing on the workforce.
In my vision for the future of EdTech, AI tools like ChatGPT will be more than just productivity enhancers. They will be key players in shaping a global learning community, where access to quality education and upskilling opportunities aren’t limited by geographical or socioeconomic boundaries. With skill acquisition being democratised to this extent, it is complacency and not AI, that becomes the real threat to future employment.
